Standing Ovation, a French pioneer in precision fermentation, has announced the successful completion of a $34.2 million (€30 million) Series B financing round. The funding marks a major milestone for the company as it prepares to scale its breakthrough technology for producing bioidentical dairy proteins.

The investment round consists of $28.5 million (€25 million) in equity and $5.7 million (€5 million) in non-dilutive financing. The equity portion was co-led by the Ecotechnologies 2 fund, managed by Bpifrance on behalf of the French government under the “France 2030″ initiative, and Crédit Mutuel Innovation.

Notably, the round saw the entry of Danone Ventures as a new shareholder, joining fellow industry giant Bel Group, which reaffirmed its commitment to the startup, and others, like Astanor, Seventure Partners, GoodStartUp, and Big Idea Ventures.

This new funding round follows an $18.7 million (€16 million) Series A round.

A Circular Solution for a Growing Crisis

Founded in 2020, Standing Ovation has developed a patented process that upcycles agricultural sugars and dairy coproducts—specifically whey permeates—into high-value caseins. Casein is the essential protein responsible for the texture, melt, and nutritional profile of traditional dairy products like cheese and yogurt.

By utilizing precision fermentation, Standing Ovation can produce these proteins without the need for intensive animal farming. This approach addresses several critical global challenges:

  • Environmental Sustainability: According to an ISO-certified life cycle assessment, Standing Ovation’s process reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 74% and uses up to three times less water compared to traditional animal-derived casein.
  • Food Sovereignty: With France and Europe facing potential declines in livestock populations and milk production due to climate change, the ability to produce high-quality protein locally from industrial side-streams offers a “sovereign” response to supply chain vulnerabilities.
  • Meeting Global Demand: Experts estimate the world will require an additional 250 million metric tons of protein by 2050. Standing Ovation’s technology provides a scalable, high-performance solution to bridge this gap.

Strategic Partnerships and Global Ambitions

The participation of Danone and Bel Group underscores the strategic importance of Standing Ovation’s technology to the traditional dairy industry. Rather than acting as a competitor, the company views itself as a partner to farmers and manufacturers, turning low-value side-streams into profitable new markets.

“Our patented technology is becoming the focal point for an industry-wide shift toward sustainable, high-performance proteins,” said Yvan Chardonnens, CEO of Standing Ovation, in the press release. “By combining technological innovation with the dairy industry’s expertise, we are bridging the gap between the agri-food industry and deep tech.”

The Series B funds are earmarked for a rapid commercial rollout. The company has identified the United States as its primary launch market, with plans to expand into Europe and Asia by the end of 2027.

A Vote of Confidence from Investors

Investors view Standing Ovation as a key player in the decarbonization of the food sector. Edouard Combette, Senior Investment Director at Bpifrance, highlighted the company’s “circular economy approach” as a reason for its status as a strategic partner for industrial leaders. “We are very proud to support Standing Ovation in this new stage of its development,” he said.

Laurianne Garcia-Ordonez of Crédit Mutuel Innovation added that the technology perfectly solves the dual challenge of growing dairy consumption and stagnating traditional milk production. “With this first investment in the agri-food sector, Crédit Mutuel Innovation reaffirms its ambition in the broad life sciences sector,” she stated.

As the company scales, it aims to become a global leader in food transformation. With eight patent families shielding its intellectual property and the backing of some of the world’s largest food corporations, Standing Ovation is positioning itself to bring Advanced Casein™ to the global stage, offering consumers the taste and nutrition of dairy with a fraction of the environmental footprint.
