Statistics Canada raised its forecast for this season’s wheat production forecast from a previous estimate of 27.5 million tons to 29.3 million tons, and raised its forecast for canola production to 15.6 million tons – up from a previous forecast of 14.1 million tons. Canola output will be down 13% from last year’s record production, but will still be the second highest production on record. The higher production levels are surprising to many in the industry after widespread flooding prompted regions of Saskatchewan and Manitoba to declare states of emergency, and Saskatchewan’s agricultural ministry claimed that as much as 3 million acres of crop could be lost. Spring wheat output will be 21.2 million tons – down 22% from a year earlier, and the durum wheat crop will be down 20% year on year to 5.2 million tons.
