Canada: After Record 2013 Output, Steep Declines in Field Crops Expected

After record-breaking output last year, Canada is forecast to see significant drops in production across most field crops according to Statistics Canada.  Canola output is forecast to drop 22% to 14.1 million tons from a record crop of 18 million tons last year because of a 20% drop in estimated national yields to 32.1 bushels per acre.  Saskatchewan will see a 20% drop in yields for a 23% decrease in production to 6.9 million tons.   Manitoba production is estimated to drop by 26% to 2.1 million tons and Alberta producers will see a 19% drop in yields to 35.3 bushels per acre for an output decrease of 18% to 4.9 million tons.  National wheat production will fall 27% to 27.5 million tons – down from 37.5 million tons last year with a decrease of harvested area of 10.5% to 21.1 million acres and a decrease in yields of 18% to 43.7 bushels per acre.  Oat production will decrease 31% to 2.7 million tons, and feed corn production will fall 19.7% to 11.4 million tons from 14.2 million tons last year.  In contrast, Canada is expected to see another record soybean harvest at 6.0 million tons with a 17% increase in harvested area.
