Drone Company 3D Robotics Raises $50 Million in Series C

Berkeley, California-based drone company, 3D Robotics, has raised $50 million in a Series C round of fundraising to be used to support product development.

This funding round, which occurred shortly after the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced its proposal for established rules regarding commercial drone use, was led by Qualcomm Ventures, and included Foundry Group, Mayfield, O’Reilly AlphaTech Ventures, Shea Ventures, and True Ventures.

Founded in 2009 by Wired Magazine editor, Chris Anderson, 3D Robotics previously raised $36 million in Series B funding in December 2013.

The company’s drones perform aerial photography, video, mapping, surveying, and 3D modeling, and have the ability to follow pre-planned flight paths or to follow a person on the ground. 3D Robotics states that it will be incorporating technology from Qualcomm Technologies Inc., a subsidiary of Qualcomm Inc., of which Qualcomm Ventures is the venture arm, in the advancement of its commercial and consumer drones.
