Greenland-based Rock Flour Company (RFC), which is behind a natural plant nutrient solution for crop agriculture, has secured €6.1 million (US$7.1 million) in a seed funding round, marking a leap forward toward transforming global agriculture and tackling climate change. Led by the Export and Investment Fund of Denmark (EIFO) and Novo Holdings, the round extended to financial institutions Greenlandic Nalik Ventures and SISA, as well as Carbon Drawdown Initiative, alongside an existing investor lineup that includes 2degrees, The Footprint Fund and Planetary Impact Ventures. The investment highlights RFC’s innovative use of Greenlandic glacial rock flour to boost crop yields and capture carbon.

Rock Flour Company harnesses glacial rock flour, a fine, nutrient-rich powder (tiny rock particles) naturally produced by Greenland’s glaciers, which deposit over a billion tons of this material each year. This unique resource’s role is two pronged: enhancing soil health to improve agricultural productivity while sequestering carbon dioxide through enhanced rock weathering. By applying glacial rock flour to farmland, Rock Flour Company is looking to reduce reliance on synthetic fertilizers and turn croplands into carbon sinks, addressing both food security and environmental challenges.

Proceeds from the round will be directed toward Rock Flour Company’s mission to transform agriculture with glacial rock flour. This investment will launch the company’s inaugural commercial glacial rock flour project in Greenland, roll out long-term pilot programs to demonstrate real-world benefits, secure large-scale permits, build partnerships with farmers and industry players, and accelerate research and processing innovations to raise glacial rock flour’s profile in sustainable farming and carbon capture.

So far, field trials across Ghana and Denmark bankrolled by the Novo Nordisk Foundation have delivered impressive results. Rock Flour Company’s early trials showed that glacial rock flour can lead to crop yield uplifts of up to 30 percent while cutting down on synthetic fertilizers. These findings position this resource as a natural, sustainable alternative to conventional fertilizers, leveraging its mineral content to nourish soils and support regenerative farming.

Rock Flour Company COO Eliot Booth stated, “We are thrilled to have the support of leading institutional investors from both Greenland – where we operate – and Denmark, where we will first deploy. This investment allows us to fast-track Greenland operations and deliver scalable proof-of-concept with global relevance.”

EIFO Chief Investment Officer Erik Balck Sørensen commented, “Glacial Rock Flour has the potential to capture and store carbon from the air at a gigaton scale and unlock farmers’ access to a more sustainable crop nutrient source. Aligning with EIFO’s mandate to accelerate the green transition, Rock Flour Company is driving local development and solving key sustainability issues within the global agriculture industry. Combined with a world-class founder team, we’re pleased to have taken a seat at the table in this latest funding round.”

Nalik Ventures Interim CEO Peter Christiansen also weighed in, saying, “Backing the development of an innovative solution that not only addresses global climate challenges but also has the potential to fundamentally strengthen Greenland’s economy is what we’re set out to do. The Arctic can be a source of source of optimism in the global transition, and this project proves just that.”

With Greenland’s glaciers producing over a billion tons of glacial rock flour each year, these small rock particles could turn global farmlands into enduring carbon sinks. By harnessing glacial rock flour, Rock Flour Company supports sustainable agriculture and contributes to climate change mitigation.
