New Bird Flu Strain Causing Concern for Poultry Producers in SE Asia

The United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organization has issued a warning to closely monitor a newly emerged, highly virulent H5N6 strain of avian flu that has been detected since April in domestic birds in China, Laos, and Vietnam.  H5N6 has proven to be of particular concern because it has been detected in widely distanced locations and is highly pathogenic to chicken and geese with a high death rate within 72 hours – posing a serious threat to the poultry industries of Southeast Asia.  Since the strain emerged one human infection has occurred in China which proved fatal, however no further cases have been reported, suggesting that the strain does not easily spread from animals to humans.  To read further:
