Record EU Wheat Crop of 152.9 Million Tons Forecast

October 8, 2014

The European Commission has forecast that EU wheat production will outpace last year’s production by 7% and surpass the Commission’s August forecast by 6.1 million tons to reach an output of 152.9 million tons.  The UK is forecast to see the strongest increase in production, seeing an increase of 40% year over year to 16.6 million tons according to Strategie Grains.  Following the UK, Germany will see an increase of 10% over last year to produce 27.6 million tons.  Of all wheat producing EU countries, Spain and Bulgaria are expected to see a decline in output.  Although production expectations for the EU are high, expectations of quality are not necessarily so.  Low temperatures and heavy rainfall have produced wheat of lower specific weight and Hagberg results in some regions.  Industry analysts estimate that 60% of this year’s EU wheat crop will be of milling quality – down from 71% last year and 73% two seasons ago.
