Swedish agtech startup Cerve has moved closer to its goal of revolutionizing the world’s food supply chain. In its latest seed round, Cerve has secured £3.5 million (US$4.4 million), the proceeds of which it will direct toward eradicating inefficiencies in the world’ s food supply chain through its proprietary application programing interface (API). Led by SuperSeed, a London-based venture capital firm, the round also extended to other backers including Zenith Ventures, Ponderosa Ventures and The First Thirty.
SuperSeed Principal Ferdinand Reynolds shared on LinkedIn how the food and beverage sector is a tough one to disrupt, given its fragmented nature and slim margins. However, he also believes that Cerve could hold the key to unlock the food supply chain bottlenecks, calling the company’s solution “elegant.” He also told Sky News that Cerve’s “approach to data standardization and connectivity is groundbreaking and has the potential to reshape how the global food system operates.”
Founded in 2019 by Dan Mazig, Cerve was created to address the patch-work and archaic data delivery in the world’s food supply chain. Mazig observed gaps around standardization, digital connections among platforms and real-time solutions. Not only are these challenges operational in nature but they threaten to interfere with some of the industry’s most pressing issues, not least food waste and global food security. According to data cited by Cerve, one-third of food produced globally ends up being wasted, costing the industry billions of dollars with no end in sight.
Cerve is looking to flip the script through its infrastructure and API, which serve to provide the data standardization needed to catalyze the industry toward change across solutions, applications and automation. The company believes that by providing these stakeholders with access to rich, real-time data, the industry will be able to better address the challenges around the world’s food supply chain faster and in a more efficient manner.
Cerve Founder and CEO Dan Mazig is cited by Sky News as saying, “Solving the fragmented and disconnected problems within the food system requires new thinking and a more creative and innovative approach. Current progress is simply not fast or effective enough. We believe that the key to a sustainable and resilient food system is rooted in data.”
Cerve’s technology platform is currently used by 2,000 customers in the U.K. and across Europe.
