2014 California Winegrape Harvest: Earliest and Third in a String of Great Vintages This Decade

Despite an earthquake hitting in August and ongoing severe drought, California’s wine grape production for 2014 is forecast to be 3.9 million tons – 8% below 2013’s record crop but still the third largest harvest on record according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Pacific Regional Crop Production Report issued in August.  This season will also be one of the earliest harvests with a mild winter and spring causing early bud break. Harvesting for sparkling wines began in July and by the second week in October Trinchero Family Estates which owns 10,000 acres of vineyards across Napa, Sonoma, the Central Coast, Lodi, and Amador had harvested 80% of their acreage. Winemakers including Duckhorn Vineyards, Wild Horse Winery and Vineyards, Wente Family Estates and Livermore Valley, Francis Ford Coppola Winery, and the Wine Institute have all stated that the 2014 vintage is exceptional.  To read further:
