Agribusiness continues to grow as new agtech enters the space, commodity demands shift and grow, and investors look closely at things like sustainability, natural capital and more. And as agribusiness grows, so too do those behind the scenes, through active leadership, strategic thinking and innovation.
Women in Agribusiness (WIA) recognizes that these changes do not happen overnight; nor do they take shape without strong minds behind every initiative. Since 2013, WIA has selected three women for the WIA Demeter Award of Excellence, designed to elevate women in the agribusiness sector. Named after the Greek goddess of harvest, this award elevates women with at least 10 years of experience, leads as a positive example, breaks down barriers while exemplifying professionalism.
To further promote the achievements of women in agribusiness, WIA has expanded its award program to include six new leadership awards. The addition of these awards provides a space for up-and-coming leaders to shine.
“The Demeter Award is the gold standard,” shared Svitlana Synkovska, WIA portfolio director. “However, we wanted to open the doors for those whose work is equally deserving of recognition, but may not have yet compiled the career portfolio worthy of a Demeter Award.”
6 Leadership Awards to Honor the Women Behind Agribusiness
While the addition of the new leadership awards grew organically from the Demeter Award of Excellence, the WIA team wanted to make sure these awards were aligned with industry standards. When deciding what to include, they made sure to do their research, diving into the areas of agribusiness that are critical and necessary for success.
“These additional leadership awards allow more high achievers to receive the public accolades among their peers that is duly earned,” said Synkovska.
Each award dives into a specific area where women have had positive impact across the ag value chain. They include:
1) Executive Leadership Award
Similar to the Demeter Award in that it recognizes executive leadership, this award will recognize women in the C-suite or equivalent roles with a minimum of five years of service who have demonstrated a measurable impact on agribusiness.
2) Rising Leadership Award
As the WIA team noted, women are achieving excellence in all levels of agribusiness. The Rising Leadership Award is designed to recognize women 40 years and younger who are moving towards the C-suite and driving the next generation of leaders.
3) Investment & Capital Leadership Award
Looking closely at different sectors, the Investment & Capital Leadership Award will honor women deploying capital across agriculture and food systems. Judges will be looking for leaders who demonstrate strategic investment acumen and are working to advance agriculture’s financial infrastructure and future.
4) Advisory & Consulting Leadership Award
“There are a lot of individuals and groups out there who are thought leaders and industry professionals offering their services and guidance, and that’s a very important role that does not receive the recognition we think it deserves,” Synkovska said.
That’s why the Advisory & Consulting Leadership Award was designed to amplify women delivering exceptional counsel across the field, with depth of knowledge and the ability to build lasting capability within organizations.
5) Talent & Workforce Leadership Award
It’s no secret that there would be no business without the talent to back it. This award will honor women leading the charge in transforming how agriculture and agribusiness organizations attract, develop, and retain talent.
6) Innovation & AI Leadership Award
Like all industries, agribusiness is being influenced by today’s growing technology and fast-paced innovations. Particularly with AI in the mix, this award looks to honor women advancing the integration of these technologies across the sector.
“AI has almost become part and parcel with operations, from farming to production to land management. We felt there needed to be a place to honor those who are expanding and innovating and leading in these areas,” said Synkovska.
Honoring This Year’s Nominees and Leaving Room to Grow
Nominations for these awards are open now and will be accepted through August 1, with winners being notified on August 17. All award recipients—including the three winners of the Demeter Award of Excellence—will be recognized onstage at the 2026 Women in Agribusiness Summit, which will be held September 22-24 in New Orleans.
“We’re excited to expand on the program we’ve already established,” Synkovska said. “These are deserving women across the agribusiness sector who have demonstrated great leadership.”
