Robert L. Cowan recently joined Farmland Partners, Inc. (FPI) as president. Prior to joining FPI, he was president and CIO of American Farmland Co. (AFCO). AFCO merged with FPI in February, 2017 creating the largest agricultural REIT in the world.
He has over 35 years of experience with institutional agricultural investments and management in the US, Latin America and the UK. Prior to joining AFCO and FPI, he was with Farmland Reserves, Inc. (FRI), serving in various capacities since 1980. FRI is a privately owned multi-national agricultural investment entity affiliated with the LDS Church. While at FRI, his responsibilities included developing and implementing FRI’s long-term domestic and international agricultural property acquisition strategy, acquiring and managing domestic and international farmland investments and serving on the FRI Investment Advisory and Strategy/Acquisition Committees. From 2006 to 2009, Mr. Cowan was appointed Director for Temporal Affairs for the Africa Southeast Area Office for the LDS Church in Johannesburg, South Africa, where he supervised activities in 33 Sub-Saharan countries, including several multi-million dollar humanitarian initiatives. He holds a MS in Agricultural Economics and a BS in Spanish with an emphasis in business.
