DuPont Sets Sustainability Targets, Earmarks $10B for Sustainable Food

DuPont has announced a range of sustainability goals through 2020 that include a reduction of the group’s environmental footprint and fundig for the advancement of sustainable food innovations.

The group’s Food Security goal includes the commitment by the company to allocate $10 billion to fund research and development initiatives for the development of production systems that will result in more food with enhanced nutritional profiles, a higher standard of food safety and sustainability, extended freshness timelines, and less waste. Through this investment, DuPont aims to create 4,000 new products by 2020.

“We will further embed sustainability in our innovation process and challenge all products in our pipeline to contribute to a safer, healthier, more sustainable world,” states the group’s innovation plan, reports sustainable business news website edie.net. “We will track our progress and measure and report the quantifiable safety, health, and sustainability benefits from major growth innovations.”

In August, CDP, which ranks chemical companies in regard to emission-related parameters, evaluated 18 companies with a combined market cap of over $500 billion. DuPont was ranked as the ‘comfortable leader’ across areas including product innovation, energy efficiency, water risk, and carbon regulation.

Despite this positive ranking, DuPont is targeting goals to reduce its non-renewable energy use per adjusted dollar of revenue by 10%, and is aiming to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions intensity by 7%. The group is also planning to enact water mitigation measures across its sites in high-risk water regions, and is planning to instill waste goals at each company facility that are “appropriate to its operation” by 2020.
