The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Kiev bureau is forecasting Ukraine will ship 20 million tons of corn for 2014/15 – an amount within 5,000 tons of last year’s record shipments, and 3.5 million tons above the official USDA estimate, although this estimate could be revised after the release of the World Agricultural Supply and Demand Report (WASDE) on February 10th. These expectations are supported by the country’s increased efficiency of production, strong quality of inputs, and strong demand. These figures would mean Ukraine unseating Brazil as the world’s second biggest corn exporter behind the U.S. , which the USDA estimates will ship 44.45 million tons of corn this season. Because of many farmers switching from corn to soybeans, Brazil is currently expected to see corn exports totaling 19.5 million tons. Ukraine’s government and industry have agreed to limit exports this season, however corn export limits have been set quite high at 20.2 million tons and shipments continue to flow through Black Sea ports with Odessa and Yuznyj responsible for 46% of all corn exports.
