The French firm, Cémoi is opening a chocolate factory in Cote D’Ivoire, making the rare decision to produce chocolate at its point of origin in a cocoa origin country.
The new factory, which will be adjacent to Cémoi’s cocoa processing plant in Yopougon, close to the country’s capital, will have the capacity to produce 5,000 tons of chocolate per year, and will produce chocolate spreads, breakfast powder, and gourmet chocolate.
Over 70% of the world’s cocoa comes from Africa, and Cémoi has sourced cocoa from Cote D’Ivoire since the 1970’s. However, although approximately 40% of the world’s cocoa is processed at its point of origin, less than 1% of chocolate is manufactured as such.
Producing chocolate in a cocoa origin country is part of Cémoi’s ‘bean to bar’ business model, and enable the company to be an advance player in a promising developing market.
