According to the International Grain Council, Canada’s exports of canola have fallen 19% to 3.2 million tons since August after record crops of both rapeseed and wheat have clogged the country’s rail system. In some cases vessels are having to wait off of Vancouver for 30 days before being loaded and some growers are finding it nearly impossible to sell their seed because elevators are full and there is no available rail capacity. Where Canada is lacking, Australia is gaining as Australian loadings are very high and high volumes are being shipped to Europe. Oil world has set global rapeseed exports from July to December at 7.55 million tons – up 1.2 million tons from the same period last year on increased shipments from Australia and Ukraine. For the coming year Strategie Grains forecasts a sharp drop in Canadian rapeseed production and Canada’s farm ministry forecasts a 16 million tons harvest – a 2 million ton decrease year on year.
