Agricultural Boom Sparks South American Phosphate Development

 

Bloomberg reports this week that there is 15 miles of trucks backed up to deliver crops to the country’s busiest port where 212 ships await the country’s soybeans for transport.  These infrastructure problems faced by Brazil point to sky-rocketing production, but also mean significant demands for fertilizer.  Usually South American countries have relied on other countries to supply their fertilizer, but fertilizer companies are moving into South America as incomes in those countries increase with the agricultural boom.  Mosaic, Vale, Rio Verde Minerals Development, and MBAC Fertilizer have all made moves to expand into Brazil.  Columbia, Peru and Venezuela all have large phosphate rock resources and projects are quickly developing in these regions as well.
