Aquaculture Farms to Use Geothermal Resources

Aquaculture farms in the Philippines are joining with Emerging Power Inc., a Filipino developer of renewable energy to use steam and water from the company’s $180 million Montelago Geothermal Power Plant upon its completion in 2016 to produce tilapia, sea bass, and shrimp to be exported to China and Japan.  The water from the plant will keep the tanks at a constant temperature of 36? to 38? Celsius which will help reduce the breeding cycle of the fish and will add minerals and microorganisms to the fish’s diet. The plan will save the aquaculture operations 80% on fuel costs or between 5% and 8% on total operational costs.  Cooperation between aquaculture and geothermal operations is occurring in Iceland, New Zealand, and the U.S.; most notably in Arizona which produces 300 tons of fish per year using the system.
