The Argentine Minister of Industry states that Argentina has conditions set to become a leader in global food production by 2020. In the past decade swine production grew at an average 9% per year for an overall growth of 109%. Per capita consumption increased by 60% since 2003 – or 5% year on year. Pork exports in 2012 increased by 57% over the previous year and have grown at an average rate of 5% per year since 2003. The country plans to reach a production level of 882,000 tons of pork per year and 13kg of consumption per person per year by 2020. In the poultry sector, production increased an average of 12% per year for an overall growth of 170% between 2003 and 2012. Per capita consumption increased 116% over the same time period for an average of 9% growth per year. 2012 exports increased 23% over 2011 and by 2020 the industry aims to reach production of 3 million tons per year with per capita consumption of 50kg per year – up from today’s consumption rate of 40 kg per person per year.
