Researchers at the University of Adelaide in Australia have collected data from 44 countries and have mapped out the world’s wine production. Funded by the Grape & Wine Research & Development Corp. (GWRDC), the database offers transparency across the world’s wine producing regions and offers producers information to use in order to capitalize on their geographical and varietal distinctions in order to remain competitive in a global market. The database reveals that 20 years ago a white wine grape from Spain called the Airen was the most popular wine grape being grown globally, however today the Cabernet Sauvignon is the world’s most popular. Between the years 2000 – 2010 red wine grapes have increased their share of global vine-bearing area from 49% to 55% as red global wine consumption increased significantly, especially in China. The database will help producers identify trends within the industry having to do with consumer preference, emerging markets, and climate change and drive their businesses accordingly.
