Bregal Partners Raises $100M as it Steps Up Investments in Seafood Sector

Private equity firm Bregal Partners has increased its current fund’s corpus by 20% after recently raising an additional $100 million from investors, raising the total for the fund to $600 million.

Bregal Partners, which invests in middle market companies conducting business in the food and beverage, agriculture, branded consumer products, retail, energy services, and healthcare industries, announced that the additional capital could be earmarked for further investments in the seafood sector, according to co-founder and managing partner, Scott Perekslis.

The firm, which is part of Bregal Investments Inc., the investment arm of the wealthy German-Dutch Brenninkmeijers family, has been actively investing in the seafood space in 2015 after three years without deals in the sector.

In April, Bregal Partners and other investors announced the acquisition of U.S. scallop fishing firm, Peabody, which has since been renamed Blue Harvest Fisheries, and in August, the firm was involved in the re-capitalization of ASG with Pacific Seafood Group and various other investors such as Bumble Bee Foods CEO Chris Lischewski and former Icicle Seafoods CEO Amy Humphreys.

“The capital could be used for seafood deals, though we do invest in multiple sectors: consumer, food, and beverage, energy services, and healthcare,” said Mr. Perekslis. “Our investment in American Seafoods and Blue Harvest would not preclude us from making further investment in the seafood industry.”

With the announcement of the additional capital, Bregal also announced the joining of Charles Yoon as a new managing partner with the firm. Mr. Yoon has worked in the middle market private equity sector for the past 20 years, most recently as partner at Monitor ClipperPartners. Prior to his role at Monitor, Mr. Yoon served as a principal with the Los Angeles-based private equity firm Brentwood Associates.
