Canada May See Most Wheat in 22 Years With Record Canola Crop

According to Statistics Canada, Canadian wheat production is set to reach 30.6 million metric tons in 2013– an increase of 12.9% from 2012 which saw a harvest of 27.1 million metric tons.  This will make 2013 the largest harvest for Canada since 1991 when the country produced 31.9 million metric tons of wheat. Cooler temperatures in early August put wheat development ten days to two weeks behind normal in many areas but warner weather helped advance the crop and the larger producers may see yields between 33-38 bushels per acre in the south, and as much as 41 bushels per acre in the northern provinces.   Canada is also the world’s largest grower of canola and the country is expected to harvest 14.7 million tons – an increase of 11.5% over 2012 and outstripping the record set in 2011 of 14.6 million tons.  Despite a late start because of weather, farmers were able to plant the majority of their canola by mid-June.
