Three prairie grain handlers have announced major investments and upgrades to their grain handling infrastructures within the past few days. Cargill announced it will expand the company’s grain elevator at Morris increasing grain storage by 20,000 tons to a total of 30,000 tons. Rail car capacity will also nearly double from 54 to 100 cars. Construction is expected to be completed for the 2015 harvest. CWB also announced plans to build a new 42,000 metric ton elevator near Colonsay, Saskatchewan. The announcement comes only weeks after CWB announced it was building a new high-throughput grain elevator at Bloom. Viterra has also announced it is investing $100 million into improvements to its Pacific Terminal in Vancouver. The multiple projects at the port include a new ship loading system that will have the capability to load ‘post-Panamax’ vessels, and the capacity of the terminal will be increased to 6 million metric tons annually. The projects are expected to be completed by 2016.
