China’s Aquaculture Rose 5.9% in 2013; Abalone, Sea Cucumber Fastest-Growing

Between 2007 and 2012 China’s aquaculture production increased at an annual rate of 4.7% for marine products and at an annual rate of 6.1% for freshwater products. Last year the country’s aquaculture output increased 5.9% to 45.2 million metric tons.  Although demand has made China a net seafood importer, the high value of its exports has left the country with a trade surplus since 2010.  In 2013 the average price of seafood imports to China were $2,071 per tons and the average price of seafood exports was $5,118 per ton.  The industry is quite fragmented but large players are leading such as Zhangzidao Group, Dalian Yiqiao Marine Seeds,  Zhanjiang Goulian Aquatic Products, and Shangdong Homey Aquatic Development have led the market through aggressive e-commerce, marketing, branding, and overseas mergers and acquisitions.
