Chinese Buyer Swoops on Victoria’s Tabro Meat

One of Victoria’s largest export beef processing companies, Tabro Meat has been sold to Chinese company, WH Group.  WH Group was formally known as Shuanghui International Holdings, the same company that bought U.S. pork company Smithfield Foods for $4.7 billion last year.  This marks the second major Australian processing purchase by a Chinese interest in the past four months after a Chinese investment group led by New Hope Investment Fund purchased Queensland’s Kilcoy Pastoral Co. in December.  The sale includes two export licensed abattoirs with a combined capacity of approximately 1,000 head per day.  Both are U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) licensed and hold Halal certification, and Tabro hold an accreditation to supply China.  A price has not been disclosed however Tabro Meat was listed last year at a transaction size of “above $25 million”.
