The grape vine is more sensitive to climate than other crops such as rice, corn or soybeans, and therefore can act as a “canary in a coal mine” regarding coming shifts in agriculture because of climate change. Temperatures are expected to rise by up to 2?C by 2050 and already wine grapes are being grown in Germany and Denmark. The biggest changes will probably come in the range of wines that are produced in areas that until recently have struggled to ripen fruit; Tasmania, parts of New Zealand, southern Chile, Ontario, parts of England, and the Mosel and Rhine areas of Germany could all benefit. Other warmer areas such as the Languedoc region in the Mediterranean face the current problem of hotter, dryer weather changing the composition of the wines being produced there.
