Crop Monitors Lift Hopes for EU, Ukraine Harvests

Significant rainfall in Ukraine in May improving soil condition has caused forecasters to raise estimates for the country’s crops.  Above average rainfall in most regions and twice the average rainfall in central regions raised yield estimates for Ukraine’s wheat and corn crops by 0.30 tons per hectares to 3.29 tons per hectare and 5.73 tons per hectare respectively, and raised estimates for the barley crop by 0.20 tons per hectare to 2.45 tons per hectare.  Overall yield estimates for EU soft wheat have been raised to 5.30 tons per hectare on good conditions and improved prospects for countries such as Germany.  Adverse weather in some countries has caused forecast downgrades.  Record high temperatures in France compounded below-average soil moisture levels and causing a cut in soft wheat yield estimates for the country by 0.11 tons per hectare to 7.36 tons per hectare.  Yield estimates for the UK were also cut by 0.14 tons per hectare to 8.05 tons per hectare because of a high risk of pest and disease damage.  The U.S. Department of Agriculture is forecasting a record EU rapeseed harvest of 22 million tons, while many European analysts are expecting a rapeseed harvest over 23 million tons.
