Dakotas Cashing in on Corn Boom

 

The traditional U.S. Corn Belt which produces one third of the nation’s corn, and lies across Iowa, Illinois, and Indiana, is moving north and west.  Rising temperatures, increased annual precipitation, and aided by advancements in seed technology, corn production has been moving into the northern Plain states of North and South Dakota.  By 2010 North and South Dakota moved into the top ten corn producing states in the U.S.  Farmers in South Dakota planted corn on 6.15 million acres in 2012 – up 37% from 2006, and in North Dakota corn acreage has doubled since 2006 and quadrupled since 2001.  To read more about what factors are driving this movement in production and what scientists believe about its sustainability:
