Drinkable Meal Startup Ample Foods Secures $2M Seed Funding

The niche “meal in a bottle” segment got a recent boost as Ample Foods, a San Francisco-based nutrition startup, announced an additional $2 million in seed funding, led by San Francisco-based Slow Ventures. The company has pulled in funding from a broad array of sources, including crowdfunding platform Indiegogo and investments from 500 Startups, Hawkshead Capital and Compound. Total funds raised to date stands at $4 million.

The company’s meals were originally created by founder and CEO Connor Young for fellow entrepreneurs working long hours at startups. Ingredients include protein from grass-fed, rBST-free whey and collagen, probiotics, healthy fats and plant-based micronutrients. Ample has expanded its original formula to include formulations for plant-based ketogenic diets. Their products differ from the much larger nutritional supplement market by serving as full meal replacements. Though small, the segment has potential, with recent studies having shown 40 percent of American consumers find it easier to obtain nutrients in liquid form – especially in the morning.

“It’s been deeply rewarding to hear the stories of people whose lives have improved with access to a healthy, convenient meal option,” said Young. “Slow Ventures is a perfect partner for Ample, because we both believe this business about more than just a product, it’s about providing a foundation for a healthier life.”

“We’re excited to be part of Ample’s mission to help people take control of their nutrition in a convenient way across a range of food lifestyles,” said Scott Marlette, partner, Slow Ventures. “Ample is leading the industry with a level of quality, honesty and convenience that is in line with where nutrition will go in the next 20 years.”
