Farmland Markets – Comparing the 1980’s and the Present

After recent inquiries about the current farmland market and possible parallels to that of the 1980’s, The Department of Agricultural Consumer Economics at the University of Illinois has compiled a summary of empirical data on various factors concerning farmland market conditions with discussion points on the similarities and differences between the 1980’s and today.  Graphics shown indicate the vast differences in lending rate and lending environments, income and debt, the reduction of income variability through crop insurance programs which protect revenue, and capitalization rates.  By providing empirical visual information, this article hopes to provide a clear and accurate sense of the drivers of the agricultural farmland market.
