In 2011 Carl Heinrich Bruhn launched Amatheon Agri, a European farming company operating sustainable agricultural projects in sub-Saharan Africa. Mr. Bruhn admits to having preconceived notions that Africa was a continent of hunger, war, and corruption. After initial projects in Kazakhstan and Russia, Amatheon was offered a project in southern Africa. The company invested €30 million in Zambia and Unganda, cultivating soya, maize and wheat on 30,000 hectares in Zambia and is currently growing the size of its cattle herd, and plans to spend €350 million in the next two years on farming, trading, and processing operations in other Africa countries. Amatheon has new investments in Ghana and Mozambique and Mr. Bruhn urges investors to bridge the gap between perceptions about Africa and the reality of the agricultural investment opportunities on the continent.
