GOAL Conference 2013: Declines Expected in Global Aquaculture Production

According to business economist Ragnar Tveteras at the Global Aquaculture Alliance (GAA) GOAL conference 2013 in Paris, global aquaculture production is struggling to double in the next ten years as many species passed their production peak in the early 2000’s.  The production of rainbow trout has plateaued over the past few years but is expected to decline by 3% in 2014.  Cod is forecast for a huge decline in production of 50% because of low prices.  6,000 tons are expected in 2013 and only half that amount in 2014.  Tilapia and catfish production however should see small increases in 2014, and Mediterranean sea bass and sea bream production is set for a 7% increase in 2013 to 332,000 tons and will see a further increase of 2% in 2014.
