Huge Gains Predicted for Vietnamese Coffee Growers

Vietnam, the world’s largest grower of robusta coffee, announced in May that it was implementing a large-scale replanting scheme for its coffee sector with the goal of increasing future output.  Originally it was forecast that the country would see a 6% decrease in production after a cold snap, however the hardier coffee trees which are more resistant to harsh weather and have higher yields, are already producing.  Recent forecasts expect the country to see a record crop for the 12 months ending October 2015.  Average yields are expected to jump 9% from 2.65 tons per hectare to 2.83 tons per hectare according to data originally reported by Bloomberg.  Vietnam supplies coffee to Nestle and Mondelez International among other global giants, and as harsh weather and blights affect coffee output in rival producers such as Brazil and India, the replanting initiative could help Vietnam increase its market share.
