A report from the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) states that between 20% and 30% of the country’s annual food grain harvest is lost because of poor storage. The warehousing capacity for foodgrains available in India is over 112 million tons however there is a lack of 35 million tons of warehousing capacity and a foodgrain storage shortfall of 8 million tons to be filled by 2017. Most of the warehouses in India that do exist do not meet proper specifications or international standards. Total foodgrain production in India stands at 255 million tons and according to ASSOCHAM approximately 70% of warehousing space in the country is owned by government agencies.
