Indonesia Relaxes Beef Import Rules

In response to soaring beef prices in Indonesia caused by tight supply, the Indonesian government is replacing the quota system with a price referencing system which should allow for more beef imports to enter the country.  Beef prices in Indonesia have increased by as much as 70% in some cases as import volumes decreased.  New Zealand has lost approximately $150 million per year as the quota system caused beef shipments to decrease in volume by 20% to 2010 levels.
