Global demand for palm oil is increasing. It is the world’s most consumed looking oil and is used in almost every manufactured food product. High in oil with little waste, it is also used in detergents, soaps and biofuels. As land in the main palm oil exporting countries of Malaysia and Indonesia is running low, companies are looking to countries in West Africa (where palm oil originated) to expand production. SIFCA Group, which owns the largest palm oil refinery in Africa is spending more than $400 million over the next five years on plantations and refineries in Ghana, Liberia and Nigeria, and the two leading palm oil producers in the world have bought more than 500,000 hectares of land in Liberia for expansion.
