The Mexican government is making regulatory changes that would allow for the importation of U.S. beef and beef products from cattle of any age, lifting the 30-month cattle age limit associated with the last of Mexico’s BSE-related restrictions. The changes were to go into effect April 30 but shipments cannot officially begin until the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food and Safety Inspection Service updates its Export Library within the next few days. Despite tight supplies causing rising beef prices, U.S. beef exports to Mexico have been above year-ago volumes in each of the past nine months and 2014 exports through February were up 26% in volume and 40% in value from the same time period a year before.
