Mitsui Seeks to Challenge Cargill, Dreyfus in Global Grain Push

Japan’s second biggest trader, Mitsui & Co. plans to increase its grain trading volumes by 25% within three years.  Because of the company’s geographical presence which includes agricultural assets across five continents, the company should reach its goal of trading 20 million tons of grain per year by 2017.  Achieving this benchmark will put Mitsui close to the four global A-B-C-D grain trading companies of Archer Daniels Midland, Bunge, Cargill and Dreyfus which control 90% of the global market with $300 billion in annual revenues.  Mitsui’s target for this marketing year would be equal to 7% of global trade with the expansion including increasing annual sales to China to 5.5 million tons up from 4 million tons, more than doubling sales to the Middle East and North Africa regions to 2.5 million tons, and retaining Japan as the company’s largest market at 7 million tons.
