Monsanto to Waive Some GMO Soy Royalties In Paraguay

A deal has been reached settling a conflict between Monsanto and growers in Paraguay- the world’s fourth biggest exporter of soybeans.  Starting next year Monsanto will waive the collection of royalties on RoundUp Ready soy in the country.  Growers claimed the royalties expired while Monsanto claimed that a royalty rights deal struck in 2004 is valid through 2014 and that its royalty rights remain in place as long as there is a valid patent on the seed anywhere in the world.  The company had charged growers $4 per ton of soybeans produced using their RoundUp Ready strain of soy seed.
