According to Statistics Norway, Norway set a new record in 2012 by selling 1.3 million tons of slaughtered fish with a value of US$4.9 billion. Ninety three percent, or 1.2 million tons of the production was farmed salmon with a value of US$4.6 billion. By the end of 2012 the total stock in Norway on salmon farms was 401 million live fish – an increase of approximately 7% over 2011. Production of farmed trout increased 28% over 2011 to 75,000 tons and the production of farmed cod and halibut decreased by 34% and 37% respectively. Despite higher sales of salmon, the average price per kilo decreased from US$4.10 in 2011 to US$3.80 in 2012.
