Over the past ten years production of sparkling wines has increased 40% and consumption has increased 30% according to the International Organization of Vine and Wine. By 2013, sparkling wine accounted for 7% of total global wine production, reaching 17.6 million hectoliters with an estimated global trade market value of €4 billion (US$5 billion). In addition, Sparkling wines accounted for 9% of the total volume of wine exports and 18% of their value. Total global overall vineyard area is 7,159 million hectares – showing a slight reduction in European vineyard acreage but continued increases in vineyard area in the world’s two vineyard growth centers of China and South America. Between 2000 and 2013, global grape production increased 17% to total 751 quintals, with China accounting for 15% of global production. Particularly of note is wine consumption in countries outside the EU which has increased from 31% in 2000 to 39% in 2013.
