LONDON, 29 November 2016 – While the impact of Brexit and an incoming U.S. administration under President-elect Donald Trump will undoubtedly have consequences for the global food and ag sector, investors can be assured that including ag asset allocations in their portfolio will continue to offer hedge inflation and wealth preservation, said Managing Director Philippe de Lapérouse of HighQuest Partners’ advisory practice and chair of the upcoming Global AgInvesting Europe (GAI Europe).
Since 2010, GAI Europe, which will be held next month 5-7 December at the Landmark London, has provided institutional investors and asset managers with an up-to-the-minute pulse of the where the money is moving in the space.
Attendees at GAI Europe will be able to delve further into opportunities for investing in agriculture during presentations such as Key Fundamentals Driving Investor Interest in Global Agriculture, a case study about Asset Ownership Across the Agriculture Value Chain, and The Value of Operating Strategies in Delivering Agricultural Returns.
The impact that Brexit and the incoming Trump administration will have on agriculture will be addressed during a panel discussion on opening day of the conference. “Brexit has already had a negative impact on farmland values in the U.K.,” said de Lapérouse, noting that it remains to be seen if placing punitive tariffs on trading partners and clamping down on immigration could be substantial game changers for both the U.S. as well as global agriculture if enacted by the new Trump administration.
“The ag sector faces the prospect of being subject to some of the vicissitudes of the current political climate: increased nationalism, closing of borders, focusing on promoting domestic production, and probably raising trade barriers,” he continued. “While this raises risk for the sector, there are ways of mitigating those risks that savvy investors can employ to address them.”
