One of Russia’s largest fish producers – The Russian Salmon Company announced it plans to establish a large-scale aquaculture complex in the Murmansk region of Russia. The complex will focus on the production of juvenile Atlantic salmon and trout. Construction of the 12 hectare site will begin in the spring of 2014. The volume of production in the first phase of the plant (spring 2016) is expected to be 10 million juveniles and increase to 30 million juveniles in the subsequent second phase. According to sources close to the Russian Salmon Co. the volume of investment in the project could be up to US$240 million. The completion of this project will help Russia’s meager aquaculture sector which according to the Federal Agency for Fisheries and the Ministry of Agriculture accounts for 0.2% of global supply. However the company may see difficulties in implementation because of high mortality rates in juvenile fish and lengthened maturity rates because of the colder conditions.
