Swedish Biotech Secures €6M in Seed Round for Methane-Reducing Cattle Feed Supplement

Agteria Biotech, a Stockholm, Sweden-based startup whose mission is to make the ag industry net-zero, has raised €6 million (US$6.2 million) in a seed round for its cattle-feed supplement, a potential game-changer in methane reduction. The company believes it’s important to reduce methane emissions from agriculture to effectively combat climate change, starting with enteric fermentation. The latest capital injection catapults its total fundraising to to €7.4 million (US$7.7 million), the proceeds of which are being directed toward scaling methane-reducing feed additives through its feed supplement, which carries the potential to slash 1 percent of global greenhouse gases by 2035.

Industrifonden, which brings deep technology expertise, and Norrsken, with vast industry knowledge, led the round, alongside existing backers Norrsken Launcher and Mudcake with follow-on investments. Agteria Biotech is moving toward regulatory approval, greater production of its biotech solution and performing commercial rollouts across beef, dairy, and animal feed markets. Last year, Agteria Biotech raised €1.4 million (US$1.5 million) in pre-seed capital from Norrsken Launcher.

Agteria Biotech has a lofty goal of reducing 1 percent of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions by 2035. The company is targeting methane emissions, saying it’s the most effective way to slow global warming. According to UC Davis, every year, one cow belches approximately 220 pounds of methane, which is shorter lived than carbon dioxide but packs a more powerful punch considering it’s 28 times more potent, per Frank Mitloehner, a professor in the university’s Department of Animal Science. Research also suggests that cattle alone contribute approximately 5 percent of total greenhouse gas emissions, making their burps a potentially significant factor in climate change.

Agteria’s solution is the AB-01 molecule, a patent-pending feed additive for cattle that can help to reduce enteric fermentation, a major source of greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture. Agteria Biotech is also working on other products designed to make the agricultural industry more sustainable, collaborating with farmers who are eager to achieve the highest impact. While Agteria Biotech has only been around since 2023, it points to “significant progress” toward its mission to lower greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture.

Agteria Biotech CEO and Co-Founder Martin Blomberg, who has been founding impactful companies since the ripe age of 19, told GAI News that demand for its solution is strong, explaining, “Big dairy and beef companies are under pressure to cut methane emissions, and they’re creating financial and regulatory incentives for individual farmers to adopt solutions like ours. Farmers are looking for cost-effective, scalable options that fit into existing feeding systems, and Agteria delivers exactly that.”

Blomberg went on to share, “We’re initially targeting Europe, key markets in South America and of course New Zealand and Australia where sustainability regulations and industry commitments are driving adoption.”
