Switzerland is prepared to pour $100 million into Ukrainian agriculture over the course of the next four years despite the geopolitical and economic tensions gripping the Eastern European nation, according to published reports.
“We’d like to present that in next four years the program of cooperation between Switzerland and Ukraine with a total investment of $100 million which we’re ready to spend on agriculture will be in effect,” according to Swiss Ambassador to Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova Christian Schoenenberger cited in reports. Ambassador Schoenenberger made the remarks at a ribbon cutting ceremony for a crushing plant in the Black Sea region, reports indicate.
Despite Ukraine’s ongoing conflict with pro-Russian militants, Swiss businesses maintained agricultural operations in the country. Additionally, Ambassador Schoenenberger has vowed to ramp up investments in other segments of the Ukrainian economy, including infrastructure and healthcare, according to Ukrainian news agency Interfax. Agriculture represents 13 percent of Ukraine’s GDP and nearly one-third of total exports.
