The Challenge for the U.S. Corn Market

 

World corn trade increased significantly from 76 million tons in 2002/03 to 100 million tons last season, however the U.S. has not been able to take advantage of this increase.  The U.S. exported an average of 1.6 billion bushels during the last five years compared to more than 2 billion bushels for the previous five years.  Over that time the country’s share of the world’s corn trade has dropped from 60% to 34% last year and less than 27% predicted for this year.  The U.S. is losing share to Brazil, Argentina and Ukraine; especially Brazil and Ukraine which each accounted for less than 1% of world corn trade in 1960 and now account for more than 30%.  To read more about the future of the global corn trade:
