The acquisition of Hillshire Brands for $8.55 billion is just the latest in a string of prepared food company acquisitions toward the goal of de-commoditization for Tyson Foods. In February 2013 Tyson took over Don Julio Foods, a maker of flour and corn tortilla products. In June 2013 Tyson acquired Circle Foods LLC, a maker of handheld Mexican foods, and in January 2014, acquired Bosco’s Pizza Co., a maker of par baked frozen pizzas and pizza sticks. With the completion of the acquisition of Hillshire Brands, Tyson will double its prepared food sales from 18% of revenue and will hold the number one brands of chicken, stack-pack bacon, sausage, breakfast sandwich, hot dogs, corn dogs, and super-premium sausage creating a $40 million organization that is the industry leader in the retail prepared foods sector.
