The Belgium-based fresh produce company Univeg has signed a deal with the government of Suriname to acquire 90% of the country’s publically owned banana company Stichting Behoud Bananensector Suriname (SBBS) taking the company into private ownership under the new name Food and Agriculture Industries (FAI). The country of Suriname will retain 10% of the company which operates 2,000 hectares of banana plantations and has a turnover of US$65 million. The deal secures a reliable source of bananas for Univeg and will sustain the banana industry in Suriname over the long term.
