Uralchem Buys 20% Stake in Russian Uralkali

In a deal worth $2.9 billion, Belarus-born Dmitry Mazepin will buy a 20% stake in Russian potash company Uralkali through his fertilizer company Uralchem.  The sale to Mazepin is seen as a conciliatory gesture by Russia after the collapse of a sales agreement with Belarus that seriously damaged global potash prices.  Last month Russian-born Mikhail Prokhorov bought a 21.75% stake in Uralkali in order to ease political tensions on the Russian side.  The sales do not indicate that Uralkali will return to a sales agreement with Belarus.
