Urban Ecological System to Lift Australian Food Production

The Urban Ecological System (UES) produces vegetables and herbs over top of aquaculture tanks growing barramundi. The company transforms the biological waste from the barramundi into nutrients for the plants with no toxic chemicals or waste.  The UES system is more productive and profitable than regular farming – being up to five times more intensive per hectare by producing both protein and vegetables at the same time in the same area of space.  Although the UES is not the first to use such a system they are perhaps the first to break into the commercial market.  UES signed a five year deal with supermarket giant Coles in Australia to provide 129,000 plants per month and 20,000 kilograms of barramundi per year to the chain.  To read more about aquaponics and hydroponics:
