France’s champagne production which was expected to increase by 11% is actually expected to see an increase of 56% this year. Approximately half of all champagne produced in France is sold domestically, half is exported. The UK, U.S., and Germany consume over 60 million bottles per year and the U.S. saw its consumption increase by an additional 13% last year. Chinese imports grew 52% last year however only 0.05% of all wine consumed in China was sparkling. Japan, Belgium, Italy, Australia and Switzerland all import over 5 million bottles each per year. Japan experienced a 14% increase in imports despite it already being the world’s fifth largest market, and Denmark saw a 12% increase in imports as well. Total global wine consumption is predicted to increase by 2 billion bottles by 2016.
